The term “Modern Slavery” is a term used to describe all forms of Human Trafficking, Slavery and Slavery-like offences in Divisions 270 and 271 of the Criminal Code Act 1995.

Offences include trafficking in persons, slavery, servitude, forced labour, deceptive recruiting, debt bondage, and forced marriage – all of which are commonly found in the global sex industry. Australia is not exempt to this.

Whilst the SICG have extensive experience in dealing with Modern Slavery in the Victorian Sex Industry, they fully support the Australian Federal Police National Action Plan to Combat Modern Slavery 2020-2025, which covers a much larger and diverse range of industries. This underpins Australia’s world-leading Modern Slavery Act 2018 which holds large businesses and other organisations publicly accountable for their actions in managing their supply chains.

This National Action Plan provides the strategic framework for Australia’s response to modern slavery from 2020 to 2025. It builds on the achievement of past plans, including the 2004 Action Plan to Eradicate Trafficking in Persons and the National Action Plan to Combat Human Trafficking and Slavery 2015–19.

With their unique, on the ground experience, the SICG are able to assist organisations identify key indicators of Modern Slavery, and provide advice and guidance on next steps should any concerns arise.
